It is very good to recite the mantra Om mani padme hum, but while you are doing it, you should be thinking on its meaning, for the meaning of the six syllables is great and vast. The first, Om is composed of three letters, A, U, and M. These symbolize the practitioner's impure body, speech, and mind; they also symbolize the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.
Can impure body, speech, and mind be transformed into pure body, speech, and mind, or are they entirely separate? All Buddhas are cases of beings who were like ourselves and then in dependence on the path became enlightened; Buddhism does not assert that there is anyone who from the beginning is free from faults and possesses all good qualities. The development of pure body, speech, and mind comes from gradually leaving the impure states and their being transformed into the pure.
How is this done? The path is indicated by the next four syllables. Mani, meaning jewel, symbolizes the factors of method-the altruistic intention to become enlightened, compassion, and love. Just as a jewel is capable of removing poverty, so the altruistic mind of enlightenment is capable of removing the poverty, or difficulties, of cyclic existence and of solitary peace. Similarly, just as a jewel fulfills the wishes of sentient beings, so the altruistic intention to become enlightened fulfills the wishes of sentient beings.
The two syllables, padme, meaning lotus, symbolize wisdom. Just as a lotus grows forth from mud but is not sullied by the faults of mud, so wisdom is capable of putting you in a situation of non-contradiction whereas there would be contradiction if you did not have wisdom. There is wisdom realizing impermanence, wisdom realizing that persons are empty, of being self-sufficient or substantially existent, wisdom that realizes the emptiness of duality-that is to say, of difference of entity between subject an object-and wisdom that realizes the emptiness of inherent existence. Though there are many different types of wisdom, the main of all these is the wisdom realizing emptiness.
Purity must be achieved by an indivisible unity of method and wisdom, symbolized by the final syllable hum, which indicates indivisibility. According to the sutra system, this indivisibility of method and wisdom refers to wisdom affected by method and method affected by wisdom. In the mantra, or tantric, vehicle, it refers to one consciousness in which there is the full form of both wisdom and method as one undifferentiable entity. In terms of the seed syllables of the five Conqueror Buddhas, hum is the seed syllable of Akshobhya - the immovable, the unfluctuating, that which cannot be disturbed by anything.
Thus the six syllables, om mani padme hum, mean that in dependence on the practice of a path which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha. It is said that you should not seek for Buddhahood outside of yourself; the substances for the achievement of Buddhahood are within. As Maitreya says in his Sublime Continuum of the Great Vehicle (Uttaratantra), all beings naturally have the Buddha nature in their own continuum. We have within us the seed of purity, the essence of a One Gone Thus (Tathagatagarbha), that is to be transformed and fully developed into Buddhahood.

Thật rất tốt khi tụng Om mani padme hum . Trong khi tụng có lúc nghỉ đến ý nghĩa , do sáu vần ý nghĩa tuyệt vời và rộng. thứ nhất, OM, là tổng hợp của ba mẫu tự A, U và M, tượng trưng cho thân khẩu ý bất tịnh của người tụng chú, đồng thời cũng tượng trưng cho thân khẩu ý tịch tịnh của Phật .
Có thể nào thân khẩu ý bất tịnh thành thân khẩu ý tịch tịnh ? hay đây là hai phạm trù hoàn toàn khác? Các vị Phật đã từng là chúng sinh, nhờ các bước tu tập mới có sự chuyễn ngộ; Phật Giáo không công nhận có ai ngay từ đầu đã thoát khỏi mọi bất tịnh,hay mang đủ mọi tánh đức. Thân khẩu ý tịch tịnh đến từ sự tách lìa trạng thái bất tịnh, chuyển hóa bất tịnh thành tịch tịnh.
Chuyển hóa bằng cách nào? Con đường tu được chỉ định bởi bốn vần kế tiếp. MANI , là ngọc báu, tượng trương cho phương tiện, là tâm bồ đề, vì chúng sinh mà nguyện mở tâm từ bi, đạt giác ngộ. Cũng như viên ngọc quí có khả năng xóa bỏ cảnh nghèo, tâm bồ đề cũng vậy, có khả năng xóa bỏ sự bần cùng khó khăn trong cõi luân hồi và niết bàn cá nhân. Như ngọc như ý có khả năng chu toàn mọi ước nguyện của chúng sinh, tâm bồ đề cũng vậy, có khả năng chu toàn mọi ước nguyện chúng sinh.
Hai chữ PADME , là hoa sen, tượng trưng cho trí tuệ. Hoa sen từ bùn mọc lên nhưng lại không nhơ bợn vì bùn. Tương tự như vậy, trí tuệ có khả năng đặt người tu vào vị trí không mâu thuẫn ở những nơi mà người thiếu trí tuệ đều sẽ thấy đầy mâu thuẫn. Có nhiều loại trí tuệ, trí tuệ chứng vô thường, trí tuệ chứng nhân vô ngã , trí tuệ tánh không giữa các phạm trù đối kháng (nói cách khác, và trí tuệ về sự không có tự tánh. Mặc dù có nhiều loại trí tuệ, nhưng chính yếu vẫn là trí tuệ tánh Không.
Trạng thái thanh tịnh có được là nhờ sự kết hợp thuần nhất giữa phương tiện và trí tuệ, được thể hiện qua vần cuối, HUM [hồng].Vần này ứng vào trạng thái bất nhị, không thể phân chia. Trong hiển thừa, phương tiện và trí tuệ bất nhị có nghĩa là phương tiện ảnh hưởng trí tuệ, và trí tuệ ảnh hưởng phương tiện. Trong mật thừa, sự hợp nhất này ứng vào một niệm tâm thức trong đó phương tiện và trí tuệ đồng loạt hiện hành. Nói về chủng tự của năm vị Thiền Phật, HUM là chủng tự của Bất Động Phật [Akshobhya], sự đứng yên không gì có thể lay chuyển nổi.
Vậy Om mani padme hum, có nghĩa là dựa vào đường tu kết hợp thuần nhất phương tiện và trí tuệ mà người tu có thể chuyển hóa thân khẩu ý bất tịnh của mình thành thân miệng ý thanh tịnh của Phật. Thường nói người tu không thể tìm Phật ở bên ngoài, tất cả mọi nhân tố dẫn đến giác ngộ đều sẵn có từ bên trong. Đức Di Lạc Từ Tôn có dạy trong bộ Tối Thượng Đại Thừa Mật Luận (Uttaratantra) rằng tất cả chúng sinh đều có Phật tánh trong tâm. Chúng ta ai cũng mang sẵn trong mình hạt giống thanh tịnh, cốt tủy của Như Lai (Tathatagarbha - Như lai tạng), đó là điều cần nuôi nấng phát triển đến mức tột cùng để bước vào địa vị Phật đà.
