Morning Activities

1) The increasing effect mantra

OM SAMBHARA SAMBHARA BIMANA SARA MAHA JAVA HUM
OM SMARA SMARA BIMANA SKARA MAHA JAVA HUM (7x)

This mantra increases the merit of the day 100,000 times
Mantra to increase the merit of recitation

TADYATHA DHARE DHARE BENDHARE SVAHA (7x)

This mantra increases the merit of the Dharma texts and sadha
nas you recite. For mantras, it is like having recited the mantra
many millions of times. So much merit.

2) The mala blessing mantra

OM RUCHIRA MANI PRAVARTAYA HUM (7x)

Recite seven times then blow on the mala. This increases the
power of the mantras you recite over one million times.

3) Mantra for blessing the feet

OM KHRECHA RAGHANA HUM HRI SVAHA (7x)

Recite seven times then blow on the sole of each foot, or shoe,
whatever directly touches insects as you walk (one may also re
cite this mantra then blow on the tires of your car or bicycle.)

Blessing the Speech

KÖN CHHOG SUM LA KYAB SU CHHI

I take refuge in the Three Jewels

DRO LA PHÄN CHHIR SANG GYÄ SHOG (3x)

May I become a buddha to benefit all. (3x)

I arise as the deity. On my tongue, the syllable AH transforms into a
moon disc. On top of that appears a white OM syllable surrounded
by white ALI(vowels) circling clockwise, red KALI(consonants) circling counterclockwise, and the blue dependent-related heart mantra circling clockwise.
Light beams radiate out from the syllables and the garland of
mantras and hook the blessings and power of both mundane and supramundane speech in the form of the three mantras, the sublime
seven precious royal symbols, and the eight auspicious signs.
This includes the power of speech (from beyond samsara) of the
buddhas, arya bodhisattvas, those living in the three pure bhumis, and arhats, as well as the power of speech (from not beyond samsara) of those who are engaged in the path, and also
those sages who have achieved the power of words, who have
actualized the words of truth, and who have great power in their
speech. Due to the power of abiding in silence, of living in the
morality of abstaining from the negative karma of speech, the
words of those sages have so much power. Whatever they pray, it
brings success. All the blessing powers of the holy speech – from
those who are beyond samsara and those who are not beyond –
are hooked in the aspect of the three mantras, the seven precious
objects of the kings’ reign, and the eight auspicious signs, and are
then absorbed. Think that the whole sky is filled with these together with the mantras and they are absorbed into the mantras
on your tongue. While visualizing this, recite in succession:
ALI (Vowels)
OM A AA I II U UU RI RII LI LII E AI O AU AM AH SVAHA (3x)

As you recite the vowels, white nectar flows down from the mantra and fills your entire body, completely purifying all the negative
karma collected with the body.

KALI (Consonants)
OM KA KHA GA GHA NGA / CHA CHHA JA JHA NYA / TA
THA DA DHA NA / TA THA DA DHA NA / PA PHA BA BHA
MA / YA RA LA VA / SHA SHA SA HA KSHA SVAHA (3x)

As you recite the consonants, red nectar beams flow down from
the mantra and fill your whole body, purifying all the negative
karma collected with the speech from beginningless rebirths.

4) Dependent-Related Heart Mantra
OM YE DHARMA HETU PRABHAVA HETUN TESHAN
TATHAGATO HYAVADAT TESHAÑ CHAYO

NIRODHA EVAM
VADI MAHA SHRAMANA YE SVAHA (3x)

As you recite the mantra, blue nectar beams flow down from the
mantra and fill your whole body, completely purifying all the negative karma collected with your mind.
Then the dependent-related heart mantra, the consonants, the
vowels, the OM, and the moon disk dissolve into each other, one
by one. The moon disk transforms into an AH syllable, which transforms into pink-colored nectar and dissolves into your tongue. It becomes of vajra nature.

The tongue becomes of indestructible vajra nature. Nothing
can harm, take away, or destroy the power of mantra, such as
black foods. Then, generate very strong faith that all the power and blessings of the speech of all the buddhas, bodhisattvas, sages, yogis, and so on, have entered your speech and
that your speech is perfected. Think: “I have perfected my
speech.” The minute that sentient beings hear your speech, it
pacifies their emotional and disturbing thoughts and whatever you say gets actualized; they do what you say.
By thinking in this way, the power of your speech becomes marvelous and whatever you recite is multiplied by one million times.
Your speech will not become like gossip. By the power of the
mantras, the power of your speech will not be snatched by eating.

Some lamas have explained this practice as follows: visualize
yourself as the deity with the deity’s syllable, such as HUM, at
your heart. Around this, visualize the three mantras, the same as
before. Then, recite each of those mantras followed by the deity’s
mantra. Also, if one wishes, one can recite the root Guru’s mantra,
because when you become the deity you are the root Guru. You
are oneness with the purifying deity, the Guru – all oneness – so
you can recite the Guru’s mantra. Then recite your own root Guru’s name mantra 3, 7, 21, or however many times you like.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Name Mantra

OM AH GURU VAJRADHARA VAGINDRA SUMATI SHASANA
DHARA SAMUDRA SHRI BHADRA SARVA SIDDHI HUM HUM

Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s Name Mantra

OM AH GURU VAJRADHARA MUNI SHASANA KSHANTI SARVA

6) Dedication Prayer

May my tongue have all the power of the ones gone to bliss.
By the power manifesƟng from these glorified words,
May all senƟent beings be subdued,
And may all suffering be immediately pacified.
Whatever words I say, may all these meanings be accomplished instantly.

7) Request to the Lama

My compassionate Jetsun Lama, please look at me, who is destitute, with compassion. Please look at me with a joyful and pleasant
expression. Please grant me permission of speech which is inhaling
and exhaling. By abiding in the middle of the great bliss chakra,

when I request from the depths of my heart single-pointedly,
please bless me to accomplish immediately the purpose of all my
goals without any obstacles.
When I am confessing negativities and downfalls and accumulating the two collections of merit, by abiding in the space in front
(of me), please bless me to complete the two great collections and
to purify the faults and downfalls, both natural and proscribed.
By abiding on the stamen of the lotus in the middle of my heart,
always day and night until full enlightenment, please bless me to
accomplish all the conducive conditions and to pacify all the obstacles to again the fully enlightened state immediately.
Please bless me to accomplish the aims of all my wishes, according
to the Dharma without any effort, to pacify all the evil thoughts
and actions that are non-Dharma, and to direct my mind towards
Dharma.
In brief, in all my lives and in all times of this life, the next life and
the bardo, there is no object of refuge other than you, Lama, on
whom I can rely; please look at me with eyes of compassion.
By taking care with great compassion, perfect, pure Lama, of me
who is destitute – who has no protector and refuge – may I obtain
the opportunity to experience non-separation from your body
and speech.

May I be able to enjoy the glories of Dharma without separating
from the perfect lama in all my lives, and may I again the state
of Vajradharahood quickly by completing all the qualities of the
grounds and paths.

Gyälwa Gotsang has said, “There is so much to meditate on,
self-generation, but there is no higher than meditating on the
lama. There is so much to be recited, but there is no higher
than requesting. If you request all the time, it is certain to develop realizations of non-separation.” As it is said, the root of
all the happiness and goodness is requesting to the lama.

Lama Tsongkhapa

It perfects the power of speech. Whatever recitation is done, it
increases ten million times. In the daytime, whatever you say, all
the chaƫing and gossiping, becomes recitation of mantras. This is
very good if you’re doing consultations with people. It gives your
speech more power and blessing, not only for teaching Dharma.
There is power when you’re giving advice to other people for them
to actually put it into practice.
Reciting These Mantras During Retreat, According to Nagarjuna
At the end of a session, whatever virtue you have created with
body, speech, and mind, if you recite three times the vowels and
consonants, then any mantra you recite will be achieved. For example, if you’re reciting a long-life mantra, then that mantra has
the power to achieve long life. Mantras for prosperity, purification, increasing, or any activity, will be successful. It’s very good.
It makes the mantra very, very powerful.
This is not common in the Gelug instructions of retreat. However, other teachings say that when you stop the recitation of
mantra, then you recite the vowels, consonants, and the dependent-related heart mantra three times. It is said that this was the
heart practice of the great master Nagarjuna.
By practicing this instruction, there is no doubt that you will
achieve the mantra. So each time, after we stop reciting mantra,
recite the vowels, consonants, and dependent-related heart mantra, three times. It makes the mantra so powerful for purification.
You can also do this in deity retreats.
Before reciting ALI, KALI, and the dependent-related heart
mantra at the end of a session, it is good to recite the mantra of the
essence of all the tathagatas seven times or less. It is a very powerful mantra for purification. By reciting this mantra just one time one
hundred million eons of negative karma are purified:

Mantra of the Essence of All the Tathagatas

KÖN CHHOG SUM LA CHHAG TSHÄL LO

I prostrate to the Precious Sublime Three.

NAMA SARVA TATHAGATA HRIDAYA ANUGATE OM KURUM
GINI SVAHA

8) Mantra for Washing
As it is said in the text Ka ri ka, “Having cleaned the dirt from
your face and teeth, respecfully prostrate to the fully awakened Buddha.” After waking up in the morning, when you
wash, you can do so as when initiating the individual deities of
the four classes or:

On top of my crown in an instant abides the dakini, Metseg, and
through the vase water she cleanses the outside of my body,
beautifying all uncleanliness and pollutions.

Visualize in this way, and while washing, brushing teeth, and
cleaning your tongue, recite:

OM ARYAM SIRKAM BIMANASE UTSUMA MAHAKRODHA
HUM PHAT

After you brush your teeth, clean your tongue, and rinse three
times, the dakini on the top of your crown dissolves into you and
blesses you.
If you recite as above, you will not have the faults of uncleanliness, pollution, etc. After that, arrange offerings in front of the
holy objects according to your capacity.
